I moved here from Ghuryan five years ago along with my family. Ghuryan is a very conservative place: as a woman, I couldn’t even go out there and working outside the home was out of the question! Here in Herat, I was able to go to university and get a good job processing saffron. I earn a fair wage, have met lots of people and learnt about the saffron business. Life is easier than in the countryside. There are so many more opportunities.

“My dream is to own a house and make clothes for a living – some day! For now, I’m happy processing saffron, learning new skills and especially earning a fair wage to support my husband and young child. Finding a good job is hard: my father had to migrate to Iran! But we came back and things are better now.”

I’ve been at TSA for five years. I love my job. I’ve met a lot of new people and my salary is good. I also do some dressmaking at home, which helps make ends meet. My family is originally from Baglan province. When I was five we moved to Iran and my dad started working there. Then after about ten years, we moved back. To Herat city rather than Baglan, because it’s safer. I’m glad we moved back to Afghanistan. Life isn’t easier here, but it’s our country!
